As the temperature cools down and the trees change over from green to vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red, you know that fall has arrived in the Smokies. During this wonderful time of year, there are plenty of ways to get outside and enjoy the gorgeous scenery with your family. Here are 4 things to do in the Smoky Mountains this fall:
1. Enjoy a Hike
Did you know that our Gatlinburg hotel is located just 1 mile from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park? This gives your family close access to more than 800 miles of hiking trails that are located in the park. If you are looking for a short beginning-level trail, we recommend checking out Laurel Falls or Cataract Falls. Both of these trails will lead your family through a bright forest on the way to a spectacular waterfall. For those who want a more challenging hike with a rewarding fall view, you can’t go wrong with the hike to Mt. LeConte or the Chimney Tops. As you breathe in the fresh autumn air and take in the view of the colorful fall foliage, you will quickly realize what makes hiking one of the best things to do in the Smoky Mountains.
2. Visit a Gatlinburg Mountaintop Attraction
Even if you don’t want to spend the day hiking in the Smoky Mountains, there are plenty of other ways to soak in the magnificent fall foliage. There are many attractions in Gatlinburg that take you on an exciting journey to the top of the mountain, including the Gatlinburg SkyLift Park. To start things off, you will catch a ride on the famous yellow chairlift and take the trip to the top of Crockett Mountain. From there, you can take part in a multitude of activities that offer unbelievable mountain views, including the SkyBridge. Be sure to take your camera across the 700-foot cable bridge to capture some incredible photos of the Smoky Mountains and downtown Gatlinburg.
3. Explore the Gatlinburg Strip
The best thing about vacationing in Gatlinburg during the autumn months is that you are constantly surrounded by beautiful scenery. Therefore, you can visit some of the most popular areas of town while still being outside enjoying nature. Since the temperatures are more on the mild side, this is the perfect time of year to venture down the Gatlinburg Parkway to check out all the unique shops and restaurants. Along the way, you will come across a variety of incredible souvenir stores where you can purchase everything from black bear decorations to personalized Smoky Mountain apparel.
4. Rest and Relaxation
